Distant Embers Part 11

Caed.

The mage flinched. They were back on the road again, though Caed kept his usual distance. He had even scrounged together a half-decent illusion for himself, just in case Giarmund was watching out for him. Such magics had never been his strength. But now, on the side of the road, he was hearing the last voice he needed right now.

You have been requested.

“Can’t make it, sorry Valcoth.” From within his pockets he produced supplies to roll a few smokes. “Too far from the demesne.”

The lady Alk’Hath wonders why you near Ashvale.

Caed clicked his tongue. He wasn’t one of her servants. He took payment on commission. Why was this so hard for her to understand? Ever since the betrayal, it was like Alk’Hath refused to let anyone out of her sight.

And, again, he wasn’t a servant.

“She can pay me if she wants that information.” He said, packing the paper before sealing it. During the proceeding silence, Caed looked to his shadow for the bugger. He did indeed see a pair of red, pupil-less orbs staring back at him. An odd creature, this one, and not one that had a designation either. Where had the sorceress managed to find something like it?

He sneered in the direction of his own darkness, “now get out before I banish you again.”

It lingered for a moment, but before long only Caed’s shadow remained. The presence within had vanished. Leaning back, he took a long drag on the cigarette while he considered Valcoth’s words. He and his target were getting closer to Ashvale…Which meant that he needed to make a decision. It was over for him if they managed to cross the border.

Above him, a few browning leaves drifted lazily down from a nearly depleted tree. Each leaf was subsequently crushed into nothingness before it could reach the ground.

Caed figured it was time to take his gloves off.
