Inheritance

Lord of the Mountain Part 3

A star had gone out.

Over uncountable centuries more and more had blinked out from the night sky, their fading light reaching them well after their inevitable demise. It was a warning, one that Orthenheim had hoped their twin would take seriously.

They did not.

“What is a star?” Veleria asked the darkening vision before her. It was Caellach, this golden-eyed being, and as it turned its great horned head towards her, she knew its name as Orthenheim.

Genderless beings that had once been depicted as dragons in fairytale. The ancient elves had called this one the ‘King of Dragons’ and propped them up as a god.

There is a weak star close to your world. It is known as the sun.

“Why does the void not eat our sun?”

Without your star your world would wither. Life could not thrive without it.

The scaled, glittering wings of Orthenheim came to encapsulate her.

This sun could not sustain it. I am the prey it hunted; however, I am also the predator.

“Are you afraid of it?” She placed her hand against the smooth underbelly of the wings. They were warm to the touch and she could see its molten veins pulsating beneath.

Yes. Orthenheim dropped their head into the fold of their wings to look down upon her. She met their twin gaze. Those like it took all that I knew. I fought, and took many of them, but I grew tired. My sibling was eaten by this one as a result. I fled, and I came to your world to recuperate.

With a gentle touch, Veleria took its great snout between her palms.

“Can we end this?”

Although I am afraid, know that I will have my vengeance.
