Inheritance

Bait Part 1

Raker disliked lingering gazes. Before him, his mistress merely stared at him, as did all the other eyes in the room. So many servants. Too many sorcerers. She had bound far more than the shifter found comfortable.

Finally the sorceress spoke.

“What is your assessment?” She asked him while shifting which leg she had crossed. This he would wait to answer, as Raker observed the sorceress. Her green eyes—dark like emeralds—held no emotion, while Alk’Hath’s painted lips offered no further indication of opinion.

Raker had to wonder why she dressed more conservatively these days. Her style had changed drastically since Veleria’s disappearance.

“Althalos Cromwell may have been the catalyst for this change in her. How, I cannot say.” He said. “As you may recall, on the night of Veleria’s disappearance there was an unidentified object in the sky.”

No reaction.

He cleared his throat, “knowing this, the burnt bodies in the pit, and what happened when I accidentally swiped at her, I believe that Veleria was resurrected.”

“Is she still herself?”

It was a flat question, and Raker was nearly taken aback by it.

“Yes,” he replied, “I would say so.”

Alk’Hath stood up from her seat. It was more akin to a throne, though she had warned the others not to refer to it as such. Her gaze drifted over the room. Slowly, meticulously. She was looking for the right servant.

“Corvus, will you take on this next task for me?” She asked, her eyes singling out a hooded figure in the corner.

“As you wish, my lady.” The figure responded, a somewhat feminine voice emerging from the depths of the hood. They removed themselves from the corner and, as they approached the front of the room, the others in the room stepped back to give them room. Upon reaching the space in front of the sorceress, Corvus placed a silvered, armored hand over their chest and bowed. Raker gave them the floor by returning to a quickly parting crowd. “What is my task?”

The sorceress beckoned another forward. She did not have to use words for him, as Vos’iin knew when he was requested. He joined Corvus, his attention briefly shifting over them before landing back on Alk’Hath’s elegant form.

“As we have learned, Adrian Giarmund was seen accompanying Veleria to Ashvale. He was present when Raker found Caed, in which he appeared alongside Althalos.” Alk’Hath said, her gaze lingering on Corvus as they raised their shadowed face. “Your time with the guild built a precious rapport. Single out Giarmund in any way you can, but I will have your heads if you kill him.”

“Forgive my intrusion, but I assume that is why you have paired me with him?” Corvus nodded towards the elf beside her.

Vos’iin did not react. He had learned better since his past transgressions.

“He is sufficient for the basics of this task, but if Althalos is involved then I trust you to handle him.” Alk’Hath placed one hand over the other in front of her waist. “You know well the inner workings of the guild, as well as the intricacies of the traitor Meredith and her involvements with him.”

Corvus bowed again, as did Vos’iin beside her.
